Deadline Day in the Summer transfer window came and went in Barnsley. There were no frantic phone calls, no rumours and certainly no twilight visits from limousines in the Oakwell car park.
Whilst Manchester City were busy setting a British record transfer fee with the £32.5m signing of Brazillian striker Robinho and Tottenham Hotspur’s stubborn refusal to permit Manchester United to speak to Dimitar Berbatov was turned into a joke, Simon Davey must have been glad his phone remained silent as the clock ticked over midnight.
So there was no move for Brian Howard. The one Barnsley player hotly tipped before the end of last season to be making a big move this summer is staying put, at least until January. It would have come as little surprise to Barnsley fans had Howard made a move to the Premiership. Clubs like Aston Villa, Everton and Bolton Wanderers were commonly suggested to be chasing the reds’ top goal scorer from the last campaign.
No move either for reds winger Martin Devaney, now one of the longest serving Barnsley players in the current squad. There had been talk of a switch to the seaside for Devaney, with Blackpool’s Simon Grayson reported to be interested in the former Watford man.
Speaking to Barnsley’s official website however, Simon Davey has commented that having Heinz Muller back and available for selection is like having a new signing. The reds have been without the German goalkeeper for 7 months after a serious knee injury ended his outstanding debut season. Muller made his comeback to the first team squad on Saturday with an appearance on the bench against Derby County. He was cheered rapturously as his name was called out before the game and as he warmed up beside the touchline with fellow substitute Kayode Odejayi.
No doubt when Barnsley finally receive clearance for Argentinian midfielder Hugo Colace, it will feel like another brand new signing. The 24 year old is, according to Davey, ‘raring to go’.
So as we move into yet another international break, the likes of which are becoming very frustrating for not only the clubs but fans alike, not least due to the negative football on display from England, Barnsley find themselves 18th in the league, with 3 points finally on the board and looking to push on with another win at Blackpool a week on Saturday.
