Barnsley have this morning confirmed the appointment of Portuguese head coach Jose Morais.

The vastly experienced 52 year old coach comes in to Oakwell on an 18 month contract following the departure of Paul Heckingbottom the other week and Morais comes in having coached at the highest levels possible in the game and with plenty of medals from his time in football.

Morais met with current Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho back in Portugal during a spell with Benfica and Mourinho appointed him to his backroom staff when he moved to Italian side Inter Milan in 2009. Serving as a pivotal part of Mourinho’s off pitch squad they took a historic treble in the 2009/10 season lifting the Serie A trophy, the Coppa Italia and the Champions League.

Morais again followed Mourinho when he headed for Spain and Real Madrid where the La Liga title and Copa del Rey was added to the CVs.

A return to Chelsea saw Morais once again team up with Mourinho where they added the Premier League to the list of achievements.

He’s not just a second in command though, he has led the line as a head coach previously with Tunisian giants Esperance where he built up a 74% win ratio and he’s had spells with Al-Shabab, Antalyaspor and most recently Greek side AEK Athens.

Probably a pub question one day, but he also speaks seven languages.

He takes charge at the club this morning as he meets the players and holds training ahead of the midweek clash with Burton Albion next Tuesday.

Chief Executive Gauthier Ganaye told the Official Site about the appointment.

‘We`re really, really pleased to have secured the Club`s number one target from the start of the process. We invited Jose to the Sheffield Wednesday match and began talks immediately with him and his representatives. To be fully transparent, we ran a fair and full interview process. We spoke to a lot of Head Coach’s who were both in and out of employment. The interviewed candidates were all strong contenders, but the unanimous decision was to appoint Jose who instilled the full board with the belief that he is the right man to lead us up the table, whilst bringing excitement back to the Club with an attacking style and goals for the fans to enjoy.’

Ganaye added.

‘We now look ahead to a vital part of the season under Jose’s leadership. He is excited about taking training straight away and installing his own vision on the squad, which in turn has excited the Club and its staff about the remainder of the campaign. We fully believe this is the right appointment at the right time, let`s get behind them all on Tuesday night against Burton and look for a strong finish to the season! Come on you Reds!’
