Maurice Watkins is set to be appointed as chairman of Barnsley.

Watkins is a former Manchester United director and brings with him a wealth of football knowledge and experience.

The move for Watkins comes as Barnsley look to make radical changes to the business side of the club, something that has been needed now for a number of years.

The main aims are to progress in the league, get more fans in and look at the way the club is portrayed.

Watkins was at Manchester United for 28 years and is used to dealing with players` contracts and their agents.

That part is music to my ears and hopefully now we will get players on the right length of contract and have the ball in our court.

This move has been needed for a number of years now. The way the business side of the club has been run was far from ideal and I personally found the way players contracts were done as nothing more than ridiculous.

I give great credit to Patrick Cryne for listening to the fans and making this step in an attempt to progress the club and move it forward.

I hope this appointment hasn`t come too late with regards to the contract situations of Steele and Cranie.

Don Rowing`s future at the club will now come in for much speculation. We are told to expect more changes to the managerial aspects of the club away from the football side and I think Rowing could be set to leave shortly.

I don`t think any Barnsley fan will shed a tear over Rowing leaving. I myself don`t particularly want to criticise anything he has done as he has worked hard for the club.

All I will say is that this change was desperately needed and it looks like we have the right man with right experience and contacts.

Could we be seeing a bright future at Oakwell?
