A brief catch up on comings and goings the last few days at Oakwell.

Speaking to the Official Site with news of the capture of Manchester United youngster Ashley Fletcher on a loan spell for the next month – Fletcher did of course score on his debut in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash against Fleetwood Town at the weekend – manager Lee Johnson said ahead of the game about the 20 year old.

‘I’m really pleased to bring Ashley in. We are very grateful to Manchester United for entrusting us to develop another one of their future stars in Ashley. We are all looking forward to working with him and I’m sure he’ll have a positive effect on the team.’

Describing him as a player, Johnson added.

‘He’s a big target man that brings other players into play and he’s definitely got a goal in him. It’s his first loan so we’ll have to be patient with him but we all hope he’ll hit the ground running – starting on Saturday against Fleetwood.’

Well he certainly hit the ground running!

Barnsley then announced the departure of Mike Phenix who has now left the club to join Southport FC.

The 26 year old joined us the other year from Telford, but after less than a handful of substitute appearances, he found himself out on loan with Macclesfield and Southport since August of this year, so it’s no great surprise to see the deal made permanent.

We also announced the signing of 24 year old Aidy White.

He was released from his contract with Rotherham United, and Barnsley moved quickly to snap up the lad who put in a number of impressive displays during a seven game loan spell back in November.

He told the Official Site after penning his contract until the end of the current campaign.

‘I`m pleased to get it all sorted and can`t wait to get going again. I`ve really enjoyed my time here so far and we`ve picked up some good results. We`ve got a good side here and I`m sure we will climb the league even more and we have a great shot at reaching Wembley.’

Finally, full back George Smith has made the move out on loan to League Two side Crawley Town. The 19 year old heads to them on a 28 day youth loan that will expire on Thursday February 4 and hopefully his spell will result in some good game time to bring him on further.

20 year old Paul Digby has also made the loan move to Ipswich Town until the end of the season so they can have a greater look at him fllowing a couple of days on trial with them.

The Barnsley Chronicle have Johnson quoted as saying.

‘I think he`s got a big name in youth football. Ipswich asked for him to come in for a couple of days on trial and behind the scenes they set up a deal potentially but at the moment it`s a loan for them to have a look at him. I don`t think he`s under any pressure at the moment to go into their first team but it`s one that suits all parties at the moment.’
