Barnsley certainly need to make some signings this summer with a couple of strikers among those most urgently needed because as things stand Sam Winnall is our only senior striker.

Lee Johnson’s revealed to the Star that we’re in talks with an unnamed striker that he hopes to secure.

This striker would be available on a free but Johnson’s also confirmed that he has plenty of others options so it’s far from certainly he’ll come to Oakwell but he’s hopeful of being able to land his man.

‘We’re in talks with a striker, but there’s five or six clubs in for him, so it could be difficult to get him. But we’re hopeful and we’ll do our best to try and get him.

‘He’s available on a Bosman so it would make good business sense, but we’ll just have to see what happens.’

Winnall had an injury disrupted season but even so he managed 13-goals to finish second top goalscorer to Conor Hourihane, who scored 14. Someone to take the workload off Winnall and to also ‘compliment’ him is what he’s looking for.

Various options up top, with different traits, are what he’s after with strikers and defenders his priority.

‘Ideally I’d like a target man, a quick one, a goalscorer and a jack of all trades.

‘Finding some strikers is definitely a priority and also strengthening in defence. We’ve got a lot of midfielders, but up top we need to add some players. We definitely need to find two strikers because we’re only got Sam Winnall at the minute.’

This exclusive in the Star hasn’t been followed up with anything else yet, but as they say no news is good news so all being well we’ll be able to conclude a deal for this mystery man soon….
