Barnsley have signed defender Martin Cranie on a one year contract. The defender has been a free agent since leaving Coventry City at the end of last season following their relegation to league one.

Cranie, 25, made 114 appearances for Coventry during his three seasons with the club, having previously played for Portsmouth.

A trial at Leeds was unsuccessful earlier in the summer but reds boss Hill believes Cranie will be an excellent signing and add experience and versatility to the Barnsley back line.

The former England under 21 international could make his debut tomorrow night away at Wolves.

The signing of Cranie will add further fuel to the fire that Jim McNulty is on his way out of the club with several teams interested in signing him. McNulty missed the weekend game with a hamstring injury but speculation amongst many fans is that the club are about to sell him.
