Barnsley put up a fine display, but a second half Sheffield Wednesday goal was enough to see them claim the three points.
Wednesday had already hit the post but Barnsley went close several times, most notably through Dennis Souza, Brian Howard and Istvan Ferenczi, but Akpo Sodje’s 61st minute header was enough to secure the win for an improving Wednesday side.
The Yorkshire derby honours may go to Wednesday but Barnsley can count themselves a touch unfortunate to have come away from Hillsborough with nothing to show for their efforts.
