I always find it odd when a 20-year-old, and the like, are able to complete loans under the ‘Youth Loan’ umbrella as can you really class a 20-year-old as a youth player? I suppose technically you can, which benefits Barnsley in this instance with Nick Townsend, as youth loans come with different restrictions to regular loans.

Anyway, I’m rambling and all we need to know is this loan was confirmed on the Official Website this afternoon to make him Lee Johnson’s latest recruit.

Reported interest in Townsend wasn’t denied by Johnson but he did deny a ‘big money offer’ was made for the Birmingham ‘keeper, who will now be on loan at Oakwell until November 1st, initially.

It was the connection he had with goalkeeping coach John Vaughan that first brought about this link to Townsend, which had seen the Reds’ Head Coach admit the possibility of a loan was discussed with the loan something he’s looking forward to.

Townsend said.

‘I am really pleased to join the Club for what is sure to be an exciting season ahead. Since I heard of the interest, I’ve tracked the players coming into the Club and I’ve been very impressed with the quality of the players recruited.

‘I know the goalkeeper Coach, John Vaughan, and after speaking with Lee Johnson, I can’t wait to get cracking. This is a remarkable opportunity for me to progress at a big Club in a very competitive league.’

Birmingham’s faith in Townsend saw him rewarded with a new two-year contract at St Andrew’s in May, which also comes with the option of a third-year, with this loan another step in the right direction for his future development that should benefit all concerned.

Now he’s arrived he’s not here to make up the numbers, Townsend added he wants to challenge for a first-team spot as the no.1 and we’ll find out soon enough if he manages this!
