Burnley v Barnsley

Barnsley travel to Burnley hoping to put an end to their recent bad form which has seen two defeats in a row and 8 goals conceded.

Flicker has admitted that he may need to find a new winning formula. Under Flicker the 3-5-2 formation was working very well but the loss of key players in key areas now makes it difficult to play that system with the players available.

The Barnsley boss has admitted defeat in his bid to bring in a left wing back in time for this one so I expect 4-4-2 for the reds or maybe even some variation on 4-5-1 or 4-3-3.

If the reds can bring in a left wing back and maybe Stones as well then I think it will settle the team down and the performances will come again.

A whopping 15 players have turned down the chance to join Barnsley in the last couple of week with Flicker also admitting he went in for Craig Dawson but he chose to join Bolton.

On plus side we are scoring goals and creating real chances which we didn`t do before. I am confident Flicker can sort out the defence and the system and we can progress from there.

Vital Quotes: TonyTyke

We need a new left back, two centre backs and John Stones back then we might stay up.

Burnley Team News:

Burnley are awaiting news on the fitness of midfield trio Ross Wallace (a disgrace at Oakwell in the cup by the way), Chris McCann and Dean Marney. Marvin Bartley and David Edgar are prepared to deputise.

Defender Ben Mee is nearing a return.

Player to watch: Charlie Austin

He will be relishing this one if we defend how we have in the last two games.

Barnsley Team News:

Stephen Dawson is now back in training but still a while off a first team return.

Barnsley will still be without long term absentee Scott Goldbourne.

Jimmy McNulty has been ruled out as his injury prone season continues.

Rory Delap could make a return to the squad.

Jacob Mellis is a doubt after picking up a knock against Bolton. I thought he looked well against Bolton and should come in to contention for a start if he`s fit. However I don`t expect him to be as he is another with a body made of glass.

I think Flicker will go 4-4-2 and this will be the team:

GK Steele
RB Wiseman
LB Kennedy
CB Foster
CB Cranie
RM O`Brien
LM Cywka
CM Perkins
CM Tunnicliffe
ST Dagnall
ST O`Grady

Subs
Alnwick/Lid
Harewood
Scotland
Etuhu
Hassell
Delap
Noble-Lazarus

I`ve only got it bang on once so far this season so guesses on the personnel and system are welcome below.

I think he will stick with O`Grady up front as he did ok and scored but for me the Harewood and Dagnall partnership was working well and I wouldn`t have changed it. They were working hard and it allowed Scotland and O`Grady to come on late for Scotland in particular to the damage. I`d like your thoughts on this too.

Player to watch: Luke Steele

I fear that he could be in for a busy night with the recent defending.

Match Facts & Stats

This is the third meeting between the two this season.

Barnsley knocked Burnley out of the FA cup and got a 1 – 1 draw at home in the league.

Barnsley are yet to be involved in a goalless draw this season.

Burnley have dropped only two points in seven home games against Barnsley over a 12 year period.

Match Prediction:

Looking at our upcoming fixtures I believe we need to come away from this one with a point at the minimum.

No predictions from me but do you guys think we can get a win or a draw tonight?

Next Fixtures:

Our trip to Man City on Saturday. I just hope the players aren`t already thinking about it.

It all seems to have gone a bit “Pete Tong” since Mr Davey drew us out of the hat to play Man City, so have minds been on this game since..? I worry that if we don’t win tonight, then it will be very hard to pick the players up for the more important games to come, no predictions from me, but HOPE for a win of any kind tonight.

My prediction Burnley 3 – 1 Barnsley. I would have stuck with Harewood and Dagnall too even though neither of them are good enough for championship. Team selection and formation does it really matter at the minute? until he goes into loan market we are in trouble. Also I stand by my quote above.

we may go defensive and try to break quick.maybe delap involved from the start perhaps covering the defence? i agree a point is a must at least, whats the chances of stones returning ?

I don’t know if minds have been on the Man City game, it could be the case but maybe the loss of players has just taken it’s toll. From what I hear there is a good chance of Stones coming back but it is unlikely to happen until just before the loan deadline closes.

We have had a couple of results. The eggs were firmly in the wing backs basket. Since losing Goldy and Stones to an extent the balance has gone. We have got the initial set up wrong for the last couple of games. We still have the spirit which Flick has instilled in the group. However I do feel we need a positive result soon to enable to the spirit to remain. We must stay behind the boys fact, I feel we have I just feel this backing could dwindle if the result does not come!

I would like to see the team chief select just two changes for me O’Brien for Mellis and O’Grady for Scotland!

  • chiefred says:

A point to stop the losing run but again a poor start has cost us.
