Caretaker boss Mark Burton pulled no punches in his press conference following the total capitulation to Crawley Town at the weekend.

With the club releasing a statement saying his words were ‘entirely appropriate’ after the game, and offering to refund the ticket price for every fan in attendance, here’s what he actually told the Official Site following the five one loss.

‘It was very strange and I’m devastated with the result. I didn’t see it coming, to be honest. The first 35 minutes I thought we were well on top. We hit the crossbar, had one or two more chances and restricted them to hardly anything. We didn’t show any character or spirit and it’s got to be addressed. The goals are individual errors. It was a horror show and I really feel for the fans who travelled down here and paid a lot of money.’

Burton went on to say categorically.

‘I saw three or four players throw the towel in and I’m not having that. I’ve been asked to do this job and I’ll do it to the best of my ability until I’m told otherwise. I will not tolerate that, there’ll be changes next week. But I’m up for the fight, I’m a Barnsley kid and I’m up for the fight.’

Burton obviously didn’t namecheck those he accused of ‘throwing the towel in’ but fans will no doubt have their own guesses there, and they may or may not be confirmed with whatever changes he makes for the next game.

Either way he clearly wasn’t happy and I imagine he didn’t sugar coat his words to the players directly either.

‘The lads are in there and they know who have made the mistakes. I hope the players feel like I do – absolutely cut up inside because of the nature of the defeat.’

Burton ended by saying that he was however confident that the players would show a response and bounce back from this with the ‘bit between their teeth’ as simply put that’s what he’s demanding from them.

‘There will be a positive reaction, I’m telling you now.’

Supporters wanting to seek a refund of the ticket have to contact the Oakwell Box Office and they have until 12 noon on Saturday February 28 to claim it.
