Barnsley had mixed fortunes in a way when it came to players who had been on loan pre-Christmas but Boxing Day did see confirmation of a player arrival, with the future very much in mind.

Kevin Long’s loan deal from Burnley was extended before Christmas with it confirmed his stay with the Reds would continue into the New Year with Lee Johnson telling the Official Website.

‘We’re very pleased with this news. He’s a big lad, quick enough and decent enough on the ball. He’s enjoyed being here, we’ve enjoyed having him and we’re delighted to be keeping him. He’s quite a calming figure in an around the place and on the pitch. He’s that type of player where you know what he’s going to do. He’s solid in his game and clears things that need to be cleared.’

The 25-year-old enjoyed a great start to his initial one-month loan spell as he scored the winner on his debut but being sent off in his second game led to a three-match ban but he’ll now stay with Barnsley until 20th January 2016.

It wasn’t such good news with Ivan Toney though as he was recalled by Newcastle from is loan as the Premier League side were lacking in options.

He went back to St James’ Park with immediate effect before Christmas with Johnson, also on the Official Website, adding as much as he was disappointed to lose him he appreciated having him for the time he did.

‘It’s unfortunate with the situation that’s developed but Newcastle have to protect themselves over the Christmas period. I had a nice call from Paul Simpson explaining the situation which I appreciate. It’s the same with any loan and unfortunate for ourselves but Ivan is their player. He’s done really well and helped himself to a couple of goals. I’d like to place on record our thanks to both Newcastle United and Ivan.’

During his time with Barnsley, which had been extended to take him into the New Year before this recall, he made eight appearances and scored two-goals.

One player brought to the club, and confirmed on Boxing Day (a positive having seen the game with Bury postponed), was Rhys Dolan with a deal agreed with Ilkeston Town for him to arrive from the Evo-Stik Northern Premier side.

New Head of Academy Recruitment Bobby Hassell made the 17-year-old left back his first signing with the club agreeing a deal with Ilkeston and a contract with Dolan to take him through until the summer of 2018.

Following his arrival he told the Official Website.

‘I’m delighted to sign for the Club. It’s a very exciting opportunity and I can’t wait to get going. I’d like to thank everyone at Ilkeston Town who have helped me to where I am so far.’

Head Coach Johnson finishing by adding.

‘It’s great news to have young Rhys on board and it’s also great to see our hard work in recruiting the best young talent out there come to fruition. Rhys is a good defender and loves to get forward, he has good potential and we’re looking forward to him working hard under Paul Heckingbottom and Martin Devaney in our Under 21s.’
