Barnsley manager Simon Davey revealed how hard the Club worked to bring Michael Mifsud to Oakwell.

He (Michael) nearly signed on a permanent deal, but there were a few Spanish clubs which possibly might have wanted to take him,’ revealed Davey.

‘So it took a lot of persuading to get him – and we finally got him. I was in talks with him until late on Sunday night trying to convince him to come.

Speaking to the Sheffield Star, a delighted Simon Davey said:

‘He (Michael) nearly signed on a permanent deal, but there were a few Spanish clubs which possibly might have wanted to take him,’ revealed Davey.

‘So it took a lot of persuading to get him and we finally got him. I was in talks with him until late on Sunday night trying to convince him to come.

‘We also had to fight off interest from other Championship clubs. He’s out of contract this summer. Players do keep their options open, so we did well to get him until the end of the season.

‘He was desperate to come to us, but when somebody says they’re might be a Spanish League club just around the corner it turns your head.

‘Michael’s very ambitious, he wants to play at the top level. He wants to play in the Premier League. He wants to play in any high league in any country. I’m over the moon we’ve got him here.’

Mifsud caught the eye of Davey after great displays for Coventry when playing against the Reds, Mifsud will also be playing alongside his Malta strike partner, Daniel Bogdanovic:

‘Michael’s a player that excites. When you look at our squad we do have players that excite – and Michael’s another valuable acquisition who hopefully excites, but who bags goals as well,’ added Davey.

‘You look at Michael and he scored 17 goals last season in the Championship. He’s been playing out of position at Coventry, but I’d admired for him a long and we’ve finally got him. He’s going to be a fantastic acquisition up front.

So hopefully, the Club can keep Mifsud permanently in the Summer but Davey has two other loan signings in Adam Hammill and Andranik Teymourian:

‘We’ve got three other signings which will hopefully improve the squad.’

I think Davey might use the word ‘excite’ a few too many times, but lets hope he’s right with JCR doing what he does and the 2 maltese boys up front it could be errrrr….. Exciting!
