Barnsley have confirmed that David Flitcroft will remain as manager until at least the end of the season.

The board had no choice but to come to this decision after two very public rejections from their preferred candidates.

Flicker will continue to be assisted by former Fleetwood boss Mickey Mellon although there are still a few rumours doing the rounds that Craig Hignett or Darren Moore could be brought in to assist.

How do fans feel about this appointment? It is not the appointment I had been wanting when Barnsley sacked Keith Hill. In fact my thoughts were that if they were going to appoint the assistant then there was no point sacking Hill in the first place.

Now that Flicker has got the job he will get my full backing and there were encouraging signs from the performance against Leeds.

Most of the season we have played good football but conceded bad goals and either not taken our chances or not created enough real opportunities in front of goal.

Against Leeds we defended well and put away our chances. We also played at a higher tempo and with more urgency which has been needed for a long time now.

We always beat Leeds at home though don`t we and always look comfortable so were we awesome on Saturday or were Leeds just bad?

Many arguments against the appointment of Flicker were that he was a big part of the Keith Hill reign and had almost as much input in the team as Hill so not much will change.

In my opinion though there wasn`t that much that needed to change.

For the most we were playing good football but the tempo needed to be upped. This was evident against Leeds.

We weren`t creating and/or putting away our chances. We did this against Leeds.

We were conceding poor goals especially from set pieces. I don`t think this has been completely eradicated just because of two clean sheets but Flicker has tried something different. We`ve struggled at centre back so he`s played 3 instead of 2 to give us an extra body.

The 5-3-2 formation may be a good move by Flicker. We`ve spent most of the season playing without wingers and with the full backs providing the width so nothing has changed there.

Hill chopped and changed his formation a lot during the season and couldn`t really settle on which he preferred to get the balance of extra men in midfield and still have enough fire power up top.

This formation still allows for both. Three men in the middle of midfield and still two strikers, we`ve gained a defender and not lost anything out wide from when Hill was in charge so this formation could be a winner. Only time will tell.

The jury is still out on this appointment but the club were left with little choice in the end and I do think they need to have a good think about the way the club is run but that is another matter.

Now that we have gone down this route I would like Hignett to come in as some kind of coach or assistant purely because he has said he could get players to Barnsley because of his wide range of contacts in the game.

I`m not sure if anyone could persuade players to come to Barnsley but it would certainly be worth a try.
