The hotly anticipated friendly match against Feyenoord at Oakwell this summer has been cancelled by Barnsley Football Club.

On recommendation by South Yorkshire Police, the Reds have pulled the fixture from their pre-season programme in the interests of public safety.

A statement on the club’s official website reads: ‘The high likelihood of large scale disorder and grave consequences, not only to the club, but also to the town centre of Barnsley is considered to be a threat to public safety.’

It continues: ‘Those who have purchased tickets in advance are able to obtain a refund from the box office.’
