Barnsley have signed Aston Villa’s Gary Gardner on loan.

The midfielder, who has had previous loans at Coventry, Sheffield Wednesday, Brighton and Nottingham Forest, will spend the remainder of the season with the Reds.

Gardner has played Premier League football and also turned out in plenty of Championship games too, playing over 100 games at this level in fact, so the midfielder arrives at Oakwell with plenty of second tier experience.

Boss Paul Heckingbottom told the Official Website: ‘We`re really pleased with the signing of Gary, he`s an important addition to give us greater flexibility within the squad and we look forward to working with him. He is going to help us this season and we`re definitely looking forward to that as well. I would like to thank Aston Villa for allowing Gary to come here.’

Former England U21 international Gardner, 25, the brother of Birmingham’s Craig, could make his Reds debut on Saturday 9th September when the Tykes travel to Deepdale for a meeting with Preston.
