Barnsley came through a seven goal thriller at Oakwell on Tuesday, an added time goal securing the Reds a 4-3 League Cup win over Morecambe.

An early Tom Bradshaw goal put the Reds ahead and that was doubled when Mitchell Lund scored an unwanted own goal when deflecting a cross past his own goalkeeper to leave the Tykes in control.

Having got back into the game through Sam Lavelle a two goal advantage was against restored when Bradshaw scored his second. Michael Rose’s penalty and an equaliser from Vadaine Oliver had the game on for extra time, until Ryan Hedges scored the Reds’ winner in stoppage time.

Pau Heckingbottom had held his hands up to admit improvement is needed, which was also voiced following the Bristol City defeat, but the Reds boss felt his players deserved credit for their efforts on Tuesday as he continues to integrate new signings into the starting XI.

He told the Official Website: ‘Of course there are lots of little things wrong in terms of improvement, but we expect that at this stage. We gave five debuts at the weekend, another two tonight and so it’s difficult for now and therefore the players deserve credit. Because right now the minimum we’ve got is that work-rate and energy and the attitude to give absolutely everything. And for me it’s that which won us the game.’

On another day Bradshaw would have scored his first hat trick for the Reds but as it was his brace played a part in securing a place in the second round.

Wins build confidence, in any competition and against whomever you face, and Bradshaw knows the importance of this victory over the League Two side, who came into this cup tie as the underdogs with basically nothing to lose.

‘It’s a massive result for us. Obviously we’re a new team, a lot of new faces and so to get that first win will help us to build some confidence,’ Bradshaw told the Official Website.

Adding: ‘We need to take that now, the good things we did like getting the ball down and playing some quick, attacking football, take that confidence forward into the game on Saturday against Ipswich here at Oakwell.’
