Mason Holgate will be leaving Barnsley sooner or later, and has recently been linked with Villa, but having rejected a new contract this exit would appear to be sooner as opposed to later!

Ideally we would have wanted to tie the 18-year-old down to a long-term contract, for what contracts are worth, as it would have put us in a slightly stronger position as regards to what sort of fee we got for him when he did, inevitably, move on….

Chief executive Ben Mansford has confirmed the extended deal offer has been turned down.

Mansford told the Barnsley Chronicle this offer would have put him ‘on parity with the contracts signed by some of our best young players in recent years’ and given the potential he has we want him to stay and develop further at Oakwell but ‘we need him to feel the same’ and as things stand this isn’t the case.

Lee Johnson added.

‘Mason is an outstanding talent and I believe he will go to the top. How quickly he goes to the top will probably be determined in the next three or four weeks and where he ends up.

‘The contract situation is obviously a key part of it. We don’t want to lose our best players but, if they have got that desire to chase the dream early, then it is very difficult to stop them. If he does leave, then the club will be compensated in the right way.’

Holgate has a year on his contract, and to a degree we’ll be protected by a tribunal if he runs down his deal before leaving, but an exit is seemingly inevitable now with rumoured Premier League interest so the best deal might be done now?

Despite the reports of interest in him from Tim Sherwood, with Villa apparently prepared to pay £1m for, the Chronicle added that no official approach has yet been made….
