Mason Holgate, as had been highly anticipated for a good few weeks, months even, finally completed his Barnsley exit last week when, just as John Stone had previously too, he left for Everton for a fee of around £2m.

Holgate, linked with the likes of Aston Villa and having trialled with Man United, finally completed his protracted Reds departure to sign for Everton.

A move Head Coach Lee Johnson, in quotes no doubt widely shared with the media carried be the Daily Star on this occasion, feels he shouldn’t have made at this stage of his career as he would have been better off spending another year at Oakwell.

‘I’m very disappointed Mason has gone at this stage of his career because I believe staying with us for another year would have been the best thing for his development.’

I’d agree with Johnson, however it had been made perfectly clear he wasn’t doing this and if he had stayed the Reds probably wouldn’t have got the fee received in the end from a tribunal?

Johnson went on to ‘wish him well’ and knows he’s got to focus on players he has at the club, and not those that have gone like the right back, adding.

‘But, at the end of the day, we must have players here who want to play for Barnsley. That is the most important thing.

‘We offered Mason a good contract but he turned it down. That was a shame. But now we move on and we wish Mason well for the future.’

Holgate will be a star, much likes Stone, but has he moved on too soon….

Speaking of Stones, I sincerely hope in light of £30m-£40m fees being bandied about as to what Everton could get for the England international from Chelsea or Man United there was a sell-on clause included in his deal!

Which you assume there was?
