Manager Lee Johnson was a happy man at full time following an impressive three nil victory over Walsall yesterday.

Lee Johnson speaks about three nil Walsall win

Speaking to the Official Site having seen goals come from a Waring brace, with the returning Winnall getting on the score sheet in the last minute, a pleased gaffer explained.

‘I was delighted with the win, it was a really good three points for us given the fact that it was our third game in a week. Where we won the game today was the substitutions and the energy they gave us. It is nice to see Sam back and Jabo comes on and gives a bit too. We got the goal at the right time as well which was very important.’

Speaking more about the changes, and why he made them Johnson admitted it was a bit of a conundrum because in that situation do you push on to secure the game outright, or do you protect the lead and look to sensibly see the game out.

‘It was a dilemma in my mind because you think do I try and hold on to the lead or try and get another goal. I felt we needed to apply a bit more pressure higher up and I think when Sam came on and got hold of it, it worked very well.’

As for the one Waring goal in particular, Johnson joked.

‘We didn’t think George had it in him, when he was doing his first step-over we were like what on earth is he doing, next minute it was in the corner of the net and we were saying we knew you could do that. We’re delighted for him, he worked hard again and he is on a real good run of form.’

One thing he was quick to point out was that three nil flattered us given the performance, and we are a long way from the finished article in his mind.

‘It wasn’t the finished article today, 3-0 maybe maybe flattered us. Certainly we had the chances and we took them but the defence was outstanding. It was a nice atmosphere, it certainly gives the players and everyone else a boost.’
