Manager Lee Johnson has said it’s very much a waiting game as he looks to strengthen the Barnsley squad this summer.

Having announced the capture of Halifax Town defender Marc Roberts, Johnson described this period of the summer as a ‘funny’ time where patience is key because players are assessing options and also often away on holidays.

In quotes carried by the The Star he explained.

‘There`s not a lot of movement at this time of year, to be honest. It`s a funny time of year. We`ve identified our targets and we`re primed and ready to go, but it really is a case of waiting. There`s a lot of players on holiday at the moment and then there`s a lot of players who are going to hold out for new deals. But, of course, the nearer it gets to the start of the season and they might not have a club, well then things change and their price could drop.’

One thing Johnson says he won’t do though is rush signings just so we have more numbers, he’d rather be patient and see what falls where but be ready to move when we can, and he’s confident we will get some of the first choice targets we have but he of course acknowledges you never know until they have signed on the line.

What he is looking for next season though is a squad of around 22 players, and the aim has to be to have at least 18 of those in place and ready for the return to pre season training on July 1.

The Barnsley Chronicle also carry quotes from the gaffer talking about his disappointment at seeing goalkeeping coach Mark Crossley move on to Chesterfield, but he did admit we had an unexpectedly high response to the vacant position and he’s still looking through the applications to find the right man moving forward.

‘I have been pleasantly surprised by the level of interest. We have had a lot of CVs handed in and we just need to look through them all now. We don’t want to rush into a decision. We have to get the right personality who will fit into our group as well as the right coach to improve our goalkeepers.’

Going back to transfer though, one thing he did confirm was that we aren’t in the hunt for another stopper.

‘I’m not looking for any goalkeepers because we have some very good ones already. Ross has been training at the club after his operation and he is looking really good. He looks mobile and he has lost quite a bit of weight.’
