Having not long moved to us from Oldham, speaking to the Official Site Johnson admitted the victory was all important, as that’s what it’s about, but he knew the atmosphere was raw given both sides met so soon after his departure.

‘It was tough if I’m honest. Of course it was fantastic to get the win and that’s what it is about, but it was not easy. It was very raw as you could tell and it was just a case of trying to be as professional as I could and get on with the game.’

As for the performance itself and goals coming from a Nyatanga brace, with Hourihane grabbing the goal in the middle, Johnson admitted he thought we started the game brightly and he felt the players coped with the atmosphere well.

‘I enjoyed the first 15-20 minutes as I thought the lads had to play the atmosphere and I thought they played it very well. We didn’t have too much going forward but we had a nice shape and limited them to pretty much nothing and then we scored the goal. I don’t think it was a great game today. It was certainly passionate and charged, but it wasn’t a great game in terms of quality from either side in my opinion. But we’ve been professional, scored a couple from set pieces and won the game which is what we came to do.’

One big positive for him was that goals came from other areas of the pitch on the day, and he knows that having multiple goal threats and not just the expected threats from strikers is key to being successful.

‘If you’re going to be successful you need to share the goals around the team and it was great for Lewin to get two goals today. I thought Conor Hourihane was really assured today. He had a nice calm head when everything was going a bit crazy around him and that was good as he was the catalyst.’

Knowing the Oldham team very well, well he assembled it, the gaffer also picked out praise for Holgate for his performance up against Forte.

‘I thought young Mason Holgate was fantastic because Jonathan Forte is a very good player and if he gets a head of steam he is pretty much impossible to mark, but for a young 18 year old to pretty well mark him out of the game was exceptional.’

Johnson had to accept though that we had caught Oldham at a good time really as they were short on numbers with injuries hitting, but again for him it was all about our performance and with a mixed’ reception for him he again credited the players for coping well with it.
