Despite his affinity with the club I hadn’t given much though to Lee Johnson leaving Barnsley for Bristol City but as it happens this could be the case with him given permission to speak to them.

No sooner had the dust settled on the JPT Final place being secured, with him also confirmed as the League 1 Manager of the Month January today, was it confirmed on the Official Website with this statement he had been given permission to talk to the Championship side.

‘We gave this permission because we believe that the structures that we now have in place must be the key to our future success rather than dependence on a single individual. If Lee decides to stay with Barnsley Football Club we will be delighted, but if he chooses to move on, we will continue unabated with the plan we have in place.’

I can’t see him coming back, can you?

One you’ve made that decision you are happy to look elsewhere it’s difficult to go back, which even if Johnson does you tend to think many will be of the opinion he’s merely ‘waiting for another chance’ elsewhere.

As it happens you suspect he’ll now be appointed.

Having played for Bristol City for six-years, with his Dad also a former boss at Bristol City, you can understand the reasons behind him wanting to do this but would it be the right move? Only time will tell, as will confirmation of him being appointed at Ashton Gate….
