Manager Lee Johnson has given his reactions to our Easter losses against both Sheffield United and Colchester United.

Starting with the first game over the Easter schedule, Sheffield United, Johnson told the Official Site that he had been desperately disappointed with his first loss in charge of the club since coming in as manager.

‘On the day we were poor and we deserved to lose. There is no glossing over the fact that we did not do enough today and individuals did not do enough. It is disappointing of course, we have been on a good run and everybody has whipped up into a frenzy, it was almost like a balloon that has just been popped.’

Johnson went on to say that people have to remember in the main it is a young group, and on the day he felt we lacked that ‘savvy’ to see the game through and make a real fist of it, as United just had more experience than us.

‘That was probably it today, we probably lacked that bit of savvy to go and make a real game of it, maybe if we had scored the first goal it might have been different but I have to be honest, we never really looked like we were going to do that today.’

With Colchester quickly approaching following that game, Johnson explained he was looking for a reaction and with him still relatively new to the group, he felt he could learn a lot from the disappointment.

‘We need to use that hurt as energy in the next game, if they do that we will go and they will put in a good performance against Colchester, or you can completely drop your head and give up. It will be interesting for me now to see exactly who can come with us and who can’t.’

With that said he would’ve been very disappointed to see us lose to Colchester, but it was a performance that pleased him and he felt we could consider ourselves unlucky in some ways although he did pick out some of our sloppy play that cost us the game.

‘First half – I thought we were excellent. We were fluid in our passing, created numerous opportunities and had corners and free-kicks. We were dangerous. It was a definite penalty on Conor Hourihane. I was disappointed we didn’t come in at 2-0 up. At half time, it was more of the same lads – keep going. But I thought we were a little bit sloppy.’

Johnson went on to say that the biggest mistake we made was in letting them build up a head of steam in the second half and they certainly made us pay for it.

‘We should have won that game today. My players should be very, very disappointed with themselves. Sam Winnall is 100% onside. We’ve seen it again and he’s half a yard on, not even level. It’s cost us today. If we go in 2-0 up and we’re cruising or get it to two-all. I’m very frustrated and angry, but it does happen at times.’

With a mixture of pleasure and disappointment he went on to say that in many ways we ‘bossed’ and ‘controlled’ the game brilliantly, and since he’s come in it was the closest to the type of performances he wanted from us, but our ‘soft underbelly’ was our undoing.

‘There’s that soft underbelly at the minute and we’e got so stamp that out. We’ll be signing players that haven’t got one. Players started looking like they’d had two games in two days, mentally rather than physically. We’ve given ourselves a lot to do now. I thought James Bailey was excellent today. He was calm and controlled.’
