Any realistic hopes that Barnsley had for promotion this season ended over the Easter period really didn’t they, and more to the point the last half a dozen matches, give or take.

The fact that Lee Johnson has suffered only two defeats since his arrival from Oldham as our new manager, which continued a run started under the caretakers that looked destined to take us into an unlikely play-off battle, shows the measure of improvement but Tuesday’s one-one draw at Notts County ended our faint play-offs hopes.

A fifth draw in our last seven-matches shows a measure of consistency but not the consistency needed for us to make the top six this season…. The first half of the season is the reason for our failure though.

Speaking after the draw at Meadow Lane, in quotes carried by Yorkshire Post, Johnson admitted his frustration that we couldn’t have seen out the win to keep our season alive

He also pointed to some ‘decent performance’ but also said that some ‘need improving’ and as much as he wants to end the season strongly thoughts and planning are now turning to the 2015/16 season.

‘There were some decent performances in there and a couple that need improving in my opinion.

‘We begin the build for next year now. We want to win games and we’ll go into the end of the season wanting to win games.’

We’ll so some change at Oakwell this summer, you wouldn’t expect ‘sweeping changes’ but change to bring the squad in line with the number of players Johnson had recently said he was looking for and to the required level of quality that he, and we, would want to sustain a promotion push next season.
