Manager Lee Johnson has said he was pleased to see Barnsley book their place in the next round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy with a two one victory over Scunthorpe last night.

Audio – Johnson & Townsend Give Scunthorpe Thoughts

Speaking to the Official Site with winning goals coming from Nyatanga and Watkins, a pleased gaffer explained.

‘I’m pleased. I thought we showed a lot more energy than Saturday. We’re a good side when we play with energy but we’re still learning. Generally, they’re (Scunthorpe) a good side and full of strong, experienced professionals. At times they couldn’t live with us. It was nice because we didn’t have to expend maximum energy. We managed to keep the ball moving. I thought Kadeem Harris was a really good outlet for us and was a threat all game. This group will get better and as we go into Saturday, I hope we’ll see more of what we’re about.’

With Watkins finding the net again, Johnson was particularly pleased for him to keep his run going for us.

‘He keeps going, Marley. He never stops running. He got a bit lucky but the more he works the luckier he gets. Again, I’m pleased with his performance because I think we’ve played more minutes than anyone in the country. It’s important we look after them because we’ve got a humongous game on Saturday.’

As for booking our place in the next round, he went on to say that we are taking the JPT seriously this year and it means a lot to him to have seen us ‘progress’ in the competition – so hopefully that’s something we can keep doing.

‘Progress means a lot in this competition. We’ve got a good squad and we can utilise that. We’ve got Ryan Williams coming back so, hopefully, we can utilise him. We’ve brought in Michael Smith today and all of a sudden, you’re looking round and not sure of what team we’re going to pick.’
