It is now official; Alfie Mawson has completed his transfer from Barnsley to Premier League Swansea City.

The fee as always with the reds is undisclosed but is believed to be in the region of £5m, hopefully with some nice sell on clauses like the Stones deal.

Whilst I am sad to see Mawson leave, if the £5m being quoted is correct then there`s no way we could turn that amount down. Potentially he is worth that much but at the moment it is just potential and is a lot of money for a player who only has a few appearances at Championship level.

Mawson is both good defensively and with the ball at his feet and the latter certainly inflates the price these days. Ball playing defenders are certainly the fashionable thing as more and more managers look to try and build from the back.

I have no hard feelings towards Mawson for leaving. He has served us well for the short time that he has been with us and when Premier League teams come knocking it is hard to say no.

At 22 he is still learning his trade as a defender and he will only get better and better if allowed to do so at Swansea.

Mawson made 64 appearances for the reds, netting nine times which is a phenomenal record from centre half.

As well as his contribution to reds promotion and double Wembley appearance last season, Mawson will be remembered for his time with the reds for off field reasons as well. Good ones at that which are often rare for footballers these days. Most reds fans will know how he befriended four year old fan ‘Little Alfie`.

Good luck to Mawson at Swansea, I hope he is a success in the Premier League.
