Rumours are circulating that reds defender Alfie Mawson is close to leaving the club.

Only last week Barnsley head coach Paul Heckingbottom admitted that there had been interest in the young centre half.

The Sheffield Star are reporting that Sunderland have indeed made a bid for Mawson. The fee believed to be £3m.

Mawson has also been linked to Leeds, Bristol City, Newcastle and Wolves at various points throughout the summer.

Hecky has assured fans that no one will be sold unless the clubs valuation of players is met and until adequate replacements have been found.

With time running out in the transfer window that would suggest Mawson at the moment is likely to stay. We don`t really have another centre half that we could throw in to the team and on potential alone he is worth more than £3m.

However when Premier League teams come knocking then obviously the players head will be turned. The chance to play at a higher level and earn a lot more money would be hard for anyone to turn down.

I believe Mawson would be better off at Barnsley for this season if not beyond. To get a full season of Championship football under his belt would be beneficial to his career development. Sitting in the stands for a Premier League club could hinder rather than help him.

With just over a week to go in this transfer window, I dare say we could be sweating over a number of our players with the start they have made to the season.

Hopefully by the end of August Mawson will remain a red but if he doesn`t then I would wish him all the best for his career. I`m also hopeful that we already have a replacement lined up in case he does leave late on in the window.
