Defender Lewin Nyatanga has now put pen to paper on the two year contract he was offered by Barnsley.

The centre half has signed a two year deal that keeps him with us until the summer of 2017, and it’s quite a coup for Barnsley because he did have interest from several Championship levels clubs.

Speaking to the Official Site having played 51 times for us, scoring five times, in 2014-15 our 26 year old Players’ Player of the Year explained.

‘I think when everything was in place, it’s an easy decision. I’m getting married tomorrow so that’s another part of my life that I’m looking forward to. That was an easy decision, too!’

Going on to talk about his hopes for himself and the club next season, the Welsh international went on to add.

‘We’ve got a great set-up at the Club. We`ve got a very good backroom staff and that’s been a big part of my decision. We’ve got a great manager with fresh ideas ready to push the Club forward. So when everything was in place it was quite a simple decision to make. You have to look at your career and what you think will help you improve as a player. I’m happy living here and I’m comfortable with everyone at the Club and I feel welcome here. They are the most important things and everything falls into place around that. I was really pleased with last season. For me, next season would be the same again but for us to push on as a team.’

Manager Lee Johnson said in his own interview after the formalities were complete, that it was a ‘massive’ re signing for us, especially given the clubs that were interested in him.

‘I think it’s massive. For Lewin to want to be a part of it here is great. Some players would want a fresh challenge but he’s committed himself and we’re delighted because he had an excellent back-end to the season. He’s excellent in the dressing room. It’s a big statement to keep him because there was other interest in him and why wouldn’t there be? To find a player at 6ft 2′, left-footed and an international with 250 Championship games under his belt is phenomenal. That just shows our intent to push on next year. Even though he was already with us, in the modern day there’s still that loyalty there and that’s nice to know.’
