Rampant Reds rattle Rangers

Barnsley produced a performance completely opposite to last weeks` dull draw at home against Charlton to dent the play-off hopes of Queens Park Rangers.

Three changes to the Reds starting eleven saw Adam Hammill make his full debut on the left-wing for the suspended Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Dennis Souza slotted in at centre-half for Darren Moore and Rob Kozluk came back into the fold for the injured Marciano Van Homoet.

An expectant Oakwell crowd were not disappointed in the second half although Barnsley were slightly on the back foot in the opening minutes.

Dexter Blackstock produced the game`s first on-target effort although it lacked any power whatsoever on ten minutes.

The first of a series of bizarre decisions from the referee came on sixteen minutes. Daniel Bogdanovic`s fine flick found Michael Mifsud in on goal only to be brought down on the edge of the box by last-man Damion Stewart. Rob Shoebridge didn`t even produce a yellow card, let alone a red for the clumsy challenge.

Wayne Routledge was causing problems for Rob Kozluk on the Barnsley left as the winger was looking to carve an opening for the away side.

Blackstock had another chance for Rangers with over twenty-minutes played. The big front-man saw his effort fizz just wide of Heinz Muller`s upright.

A moment of magic from Barnsley`s Maltese strike partnership saw the Tykes take the lead on 26 minutes. Hammill`s quick free-kick released Mifsud on the left and the striker`s expertly executed cross found the head of his international team-mate, Daniel Bogdanovic. Cerny had no chance from ‘the Bog`s` header, who celebrated his second goal in Barnsley colours.

The Reds` lead was short-lived as ten minutes later Matteo Alberti skipped his way down the left before finding the head of Damien Delaney to head home the equaliser.

Andranik saw his effort sail just wide before Barnsley regained the lead on 43 minutes. Anderson de Silva rattled home his first official goal for the Tykes after Hassell`s cross caused mayhem in the QPR box.

Rob Shoebridge`s second interesting decision came when he yet again failed to reach for his red card when Anderson de Silva was punched by Damion Stewart when tussling in the box despite the referee awarding Barnsley a free-kick.

Second Half

Barnsley`s second-half performance was superb although the Reds failed to make their splendid football count by increasing their lead.

Radek Cerny was tested by debutant, Adam Hammill on 51 minutes, the Liverpool loanee raced into the box before producing a neat save from the former Spurs stopper.

The game really fired up and some flying challenges were not enough for the referee to produce a card from his pocket. Barnsley were showing some real hunger and desire – a mirrored performance to their drab display against Charlton last week.

Kaspars Gorkss did well to keep out Michael Mifsud who was constantly putting Rangers` backline under immense pressure with his speed.

Some neat interchange play between Barnsley South Americans, Colace and Anderson wowed the Oakwell crowd – it was a marvellous midfield display, especially from the Brazilian who had come under some criticism from fans in recent times.

The referee did eventually find his yellow card on 84 minutes but for a Barnsley player. Anderson de Silva tripped Leigertwood on halfway when the away side were on the counter-attack.

The away side could have snatched a point deep into stoppage time, but Lopez fired well over from a short corner.

Well done Barnsley – a deserved win. I was stunned to see those officials on the list if I’m honest. Although nothing controversial occurred the linesman to the left of where I was sitting lost his head completely – the only smile I raised all day when he gave a decision against us, had a stand up row with the players and the referee overuled him twice and he had a red face and looked completely flustered!! Well done though – and you’ll stay up easily with effort like that!

Thanks a lot mate, nice to have some honesty from fellow supporters for a change. The officials were none other than UNUSUAL today, really strange.

A good win, a good run needed and then safety

  • Boxer says:

I thought it was bizarre that they couldn’t agree on a lot of things, and the ref broke the game up far too much for my liking, never let it flow.

What magic hat did you pull that one from ?

  • Thaibluefan says:

Great result but a few more like that needed to avoid the drop zone.

This performance? We’ve known all along we can do it – just that question of consistency. Effort was top drawer on Saturyda. Same again tonight please!

  • Thaibluefan says:

Good result – seven points from the last nine – that’s more like play-off form. Keep the run going guys – best of luck.
