Barnsley’s League 1 play-off semi-final second leg ended a win against Walsall at the Banks’s Stadium on Thursday, booking a place in the final.

After the first leg this match was basically over wasn’t it?

Barnsley made absolutely sure with an early goal at Walsall, eventually running our three-one winners to advance six-one on aggregate with the winners of the Millwall verses Bradford tie faced in the final!

Walsall needed to get back into the tie early to have any chance of making history and turning this around.

But it was Barnsley that did this when Adam Hammill beat the offside trap to finish from close range when Conor Hourihane’s cross wasn’t dealt with inside 20-minutes, that after Alfie Mawson had somehow managed to miss from a few yards out!

Tom Bradshaw and Jordy Hiwula both had chances to give Walsall hope, which they spurned with a Romaine Sawyers’ cross seeing Barnsley ‘keeper Adam Davies make a fine save to turn away another Bradshaw header.

Midway through the second half Ashley Fletcher added the second to make sure those misses were costly, which the reality is they wouldn’t have really altered the tie anyway as the Reds were always the more likely scorers really.

Walsall’s Jordan Cook scored the goal of the night as the substitute curled home a fine effort to give the home side something to cheer; in fairness both sets of fans applauded that goal!

Barnsley fittingly had the final say though when Josh Brownhill scored late on making the most of a defensive error from the otherwise excellent Rico Henry to round off a fine win, not just on the night but over the two legs returning to Wembley on 29th May with us looking to add promotion to the JPT win.

Here’s a round up of the League 1 play-off action from the other games played….

These were the other results.

Thursday 19th May 2016
Walsall 1-3 Barnsley (agg 1-6)

This game is to be played.

Friday 20th May 2016
Millwall v Bradford 19:45 (agg 3-1)

The impressive Barnsley (three-one) form, and goalscoring power, continued as Walsall were brushed aside (six-one on aggregate) to put them into the Wembley final next weekend.

Do they go into this as favourites, regardless as to who they play? Many could think so….
