Results aren’t important at this stage of the season but Barnsley remaining without a victory, having slipped to a late defeat at Grimsby, would be a slight concern to Paul Heckingbottom.

Admittedly, publically anyway, he hasn’t said as much and focused on what was gained from a 2-1 defeat at Blundell Park as the Reds allowed a lead to slip at Grimsby.

Barnsley took the lead when Lloyd Isgrove, who had marked his first outing as a returning Red, joining on a permanent basis from Southampton, with a goal, opened the scoring on Saturday to make it two in two.

However, Grimsby drew level through Siriki Dembele and then went on to claim a winner when Mariners trialist Brandon Robinson gave his chances of earning a deal with the League Two side a boost.

Andy Yiadom was involved despite ongoing speculation surrounding his future at Oakwell as Heckingbottom again made wholesale changes to give as many involvement as possible, 10 changes were made by the midway point of the second half in fact.

Defeat isn’t ever welcome, so Heckingbottom wasn’t pleased by that, but told the Official Website the main aims from the game at Grimsby were achieved with the costly errors preferred at this stage of the season.

‘It was another good workout. We’ve built the minutes up for the players. Physically, it was a good workout. Lots of things to take from the game. And we’ll go through them next week.’

Adding: ‘Let’s forget the tactical element at the minute, because lots of that will take time with a new group. But as I said to the players, a mistake and then a set-piece has cost us today. But they’ve held their hands up, and if there is a time to make errors then this is it.’

With so many young players involved in the squad this experience at Blundell Park will do them good but Heckingbottom, in a week that will see him celebrate his birthday too, is now ready to really push the squad and the boss is expecting something back from them.

‘But we’ve had young lads on the pitch today, it’s great for them and their development. But I do expect a busy week ahead of us. It’s my birthday this week and I’m expecting a few birthday presents wrapped up.’
