Barnsley have secured the signing of Chelsea forward Ike Ugbo.

The England U20 international, part of the Toulon Tournament winning squad in June, has joined the Reds on a season-long loan.

Ugbo, 18, was involved in Chelsea’s U18 and U23 sides last season scoring a combined 23 goals in 35 matches, which isn’t a bad return at all and something the Tykes will hope he can build on at Oakwell.

Paul Heckingbottom told the Official Website of his delight at bringing the talented forward in as he adds another youthful addition to an already young and exciting squad.

He feels Ugbo literally ticks all the boxes he could have wanted for a player he was after and Hecky is obviously hoping he can continue to improve at Barnsley, being thankful Chelsea allowed him to join the Reds.

‘We`re really pleased at being able to bring one of the brightest young strikers out there to Oakwell and of course we must thank Chelsea for allowing us to do so. I am really excited about what Ike can bring to the team. He is a forward who has pace, height, strength and power as well as a keen eye for goal as is shown by his record. He fits into the mould of players that we`re looking for; someone who wants to better themselves and further their career so we are more than happy that he has chosen to continue that development with us.’

Ugbo should be part of the squads for the upcoming pre-season friendlies against Coventry and Huddersfield.

Barnsley’s interest was among plenty show from the clubs at home and aboard, according to the Official Website.

The club added: ‘This scintillating form and beginning to Ike’s career has led to multiple clubs within the Sky Bet Championship and abroad being alerted to his abilities but it’s the Reds who have won the race to sign the highly rated youngster.’

All being well he can be the next Tammy Abraham, who had a brilliant loan at Bristol City last season.
