Barnsley’s opening pre-season friendly ahead of, what we’ll be hoping is a very successful, 2015/16 season saw us start with a win at Stalybridge Celtic.

A second half goal, and own goal at that from Chalmers, just past the hour proved the difference as we came away from the Non-League side with a one-nil win on Saturday afternoon.

Lee Johnson handed starts to our summer signings, we’ll be hoping more come yet, but for the threat we posed we couldn’t manage a breakthrough in the first half.

The winning goal came when we broke away with Scowen’s cross into the area chested into his own net by Chalmers to give us the win.

Reds: Dibble, Bree (Winnall 46), Mawson (Cowgill 61), Roberts (Nyatanga 46), Smith (Templeton 61), Digby (Abbott 61), Scowen (Evans 61 (Gooda 82)), Vigurs (Drennan 61), Wilkinson (Maris 46), Winnall (Brown 61), Watkins (Ofori 61).

A full match report is available on the Official Website.

On the win, commenting on the Official Website following it, Head Coach Johnson said.

‘I’m very grateful to Stalybridge. They’ve put on a good game for us on a good surface.

‘I thought five or six of our lads did pretty well. There was a lot more to come from a few others. Our front three looked quite lively on the counter-attack. Our back two looked strong.

‘It’s a clean sheet which is good and we could have scored from our chances. It’s tough because when you’re up against a non-league side, they’re wanting to show you what they can do.’

A wins a win isn’t it, the main thing is building up match fitness and unity as a squad though with, as Johnson said, these games against sides outside of the Football League all the more difficult as they want to claim a scalp.
