The Farce Continues

Terry Butcher has become the latest man to turn down the job of Barnsley manager after first choice Sean O`Driscoll also turned down the role.

Butcher was offered the best deal any manager at Barnsley has ever been offered. It would have doubled what he is currently paid at Inverness but it still wasn`t enough to tempt him to come to Barnsley.

This comes as no surprise to me. He would be mad to swap the possibility of Champions League qualification for a relegation scrap no matter how much money was on offer.

Although this is bad news for Barnsley I see Butcher`s decision as good for football. It shows that not all football managers are mercenaries. We have seen of late the likes of Freedman leave a team top of the league for one near the bottom purely for more money and many players happy to sit on the bench just because they are paid more.

Barnsley are now in a real predicament and the search for a new manager has become a complete farce and many fans are now disillusioned with the club.

I find it interesting that Butcher was offered the best deal any Barnsley manager has been offered and that the club were willing to pay Inverness whatever compensation was required yet there are no funds available for players which seems to be what is putting managers off from coming to Barnsley.

Where do Barnsley go from here? Of the out of work managers Cotterill and Megson are the names that stand out although according to radio Sheffield Megson isn`t interested and who could blame him.

Of those in work Rossler and Wilson are ones that I hear mentioned but why would either of them want to swap a promotion challenge for a relegation fight?

Internet rumours are suggesting Carlton Palmer could be offered the job. Please no.

There is a strong chance now that Barnsley could appoint from within. Either Flicker given the job until the end of the season or Ronnie Branson being promoted from academy manager. If either of these happen then it is likely that a former player will be appointed as assistant. Redfearn, Hignett and Moore are all said to be in the running.

In such a short space of time Barnsley have managed to make Blackburn look like a well-run club. Words cannot express my frustration and anger at the situation the club finds itself in.

Only one manager I would take from your deprived City! and he is S2!
United even higher than Wednesday in post code placings!

  • oldtimetyke says:

Wilson will be paid a decent salary. We could buy him out of contract.

  • Andypn says:

If there willing to spend on a new manager then can’t they afford coyle? Rosler has just signed a contract extension so that rules him out

  • Engleberthumbertyke says:

It all makes for depressing reading, any chance of some light at the end of the tunnel..?

  • chiefred says:

I can see no light at the end of the tunnel I’m afraid. I hope I’m wrong but I just can’t see it. This is the lowest I have felt as a Barnsley fan and that is saying something.

  • Engleberthumbertyke says:

I know a lot of clubs are finding times testing at the moment, but it’s becoming a bit embarrassing for the Tykes now!!!

The job seems to have become a bit of a poisoned challis.

  • chiefred says:

I agree. I can’t see anyone wanting it except as you put it a desperado and that is not what we need.
