Togs on the transfer list

Simon Davey`s decision to place midfielder Sam Togwell on the transfer list may have surprised a few of the Barnsley supporters.

The reds gaffer said it was for the benefit of the player that he was placed on the transfer list as he cannot be guaranteed first team football next season.

This must mean that the Welsh boss has a few names in the pipeline ready to step into the defensive midfielder role. Andy Johnson is also on the transfer list having barely featured this season, for whatever reason that may be, whilst Anderson de Silva is out until around October and the future of Brian Howard is about as certain as England qualifying for a major tournament.

So with the shortage of central midfielders, just what did Sam do wrong?

Togwell was a 2007 summer signing of Andy Ritchie from Crystal Palace after promotion from League 1.

Sam immediately gained the respect of the Oakwell faithful for his endeavour and work ethic throughout the entire ninety minutes after the first game of the campaign against Cardiff City.

With the season just gone by, it`s difficult to see just where Sam put a foot wrong. The arrival of Anderson de Silva obviously upset Sam`s applecart, but surely Sam should be considered a squad player at the very least?

Let`s just hope that Mr Davey has another trick up his sleeve as we prepare for the new season.
