Tommy Wright’s future as Barnsley’s assistant Head Coach has been confirmed with him signing a new deal.

Following this signing he told the Official Website.

‘I am very pleased, especially after the magnificent season we just had and I am happy here, so I`m pleased to sign.’

Wright spurned the advances of Bristol City earlier in the summer, turning down a chance to work with former Barnsley boss Lee Johnson. He’s now put pen to paper on a new 12-month rolling contact.

He, and of course Paul Heckingbottom (and Johnson before him), was a key part of the coaching staff that helped lead us to the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and play-off success last season.

A popular figure at the club since his arrival in February 2015 he said the relationship and understanding he has with the players, the coaching staff and the club as a whole was a key factor to his signing of this new deal.

‘The main reason in signing was the players. The relationship I`ve got with the players and what we came through last year, the ups and the downs! I`ve got a good relationship with Hecky and all the staff so I was very happy. We`re trying to progress as a Club, we`ve got promotion to the Championship and I want to do well. I trust the players and they`ve got a good chance to further their careers at Barnsley.’

Finishing by setting his goals towards the Premier League.

‘Now we`re in the Championship we should be looking towards the Premier League. That`s what we should do; you should always try to improve what you`re trying to do.’

Head Coach Heckingbottom was also delighted, saying.

‘I am delighted to keep Tommy here as part of the set-up. He`s been a big part of the success of the Club and he`s happy here. We spoke a lot over the summer about a number of things and I was always confident he would stay. We get along well both in and out of work and that is key. We have a dressing room that is strong and together. Last season we all had a lot to deal with but everyone worked harder and produced a remarkable turnaround resulting in an excellent season for Barnsley Football Club.’

The fact Heckingbottom will again have Wright alongside him will be a huge help upon our return to the Championship, with the Head Coach saying he’s relishing this.

All eyes are now focused on the season opener with Ipswich.

‘Next year we have new challenges but we are all relishing it. The lads know what Tommy and I expect of them and they have started pre-season with an excellent attitude. We will both continue to work closely and make sure everyone is ready for the first match at Ipswich.’
