Barnsley’s Jon Macken has staked his claim for a place in the starting eleven on the opening day against Queens Park Rangers with a brace against Conference side York City.

The Reds took the lead at the half-way point in the first half when Macken slotted home an El-Haimour cross from close range after excellent work from Jacob Butterfield. It was the Oakwell favourite’s third in as many games after a brace at Buxton.

Barnsley then enjoyed the best of the chances with opportunities going begging for Howard, El-Haimour and Odejayi to double the lead.

Ben Wilkinson had the ball in the net for York City on 57 minutes but his strike was disallowed for an offside decision. However, some comedic defending from the Reds on 75 minutes allowed York City back into the game through a Craig Farrell effort.

York City took the lead ten minutes later through Farrell’s fourth of the pre-season, when he smashed the ball home from eighteen yards.

Once again it was left to Jon Macken to spare the Reds’ blushes with his fourth of the pre-season, a tap in from six yards on 89 minutes.

Barnsley: Letheren, Hassell, Kozluk, Moore (Atkinson 74), Foster, Howard, El Haimour, Leon (Heslop 78), Butterfield (Odejayi 45), Macken, Smith (Trialist).

Subs not used: Togwell, Hunt (Trialist), Johnson.

The Reds travel to new football league venue Don Valley Stadium to face Rotherham United on Saturday 26th July for their next pre-season friendly.
