Barnsley’s FA Cup run is over after a one-nil defeat at Moss Lane against Altrincham on Saturday.

Things went from bad to worse for Barnsley with the Reds falling at the first hurdle in the FA Cup with the National League side the latest to inflict pain on the club, and Johnson with a second half goal from Reeves putting them through.

A goalless first half saw the home side closest to breaking through with Moult forcing Davies, returning to the Barnsley goal, into a save.

Barnsley weren’t short of chances but couldn’t take them.

The second half had barely got underway when Altrincham broke through, Crowther had his effort parried away by Barnsley ‘keeper Davies with Reeves (46) on hand to finish into an empty net to set Alty up for an upset.

Maybe 45 places below Barnsley, who still couldn’t force a breakthrough, Altrincham held onto this lead to move into the second round for the first time since 2001.

In winning they also secured a win over a Football League side in this competition for the first time since 1994 with Barnsley’s worse run in 56-years continuing with an eighth defeat in a row suffered….
