Barnsley’s Capital One Cup run is over for another season, however it wasn’t for a lack of trying, after a defeat at Oakwell against Everton on Wednesday after extra time.

The Sky Sports cameras arrived looking for an upset, and it looked like they would get one at one point!

Winnall and Watkins had Barnsley two-up before Mirallas and Naismith made it two-each! Crowley restored the Reds lead but Lukaku forced extra time, his second confirmed the five-three win with that coming after a Roberts own goal had given the Toffees the lead for the first time.

As I say that upset was on when Winnall (22) forced home the opener and just a few minutes later Watkins (28) made it two with Barnsley well in control at half time and deserving the lead.

Everton, with Martinez obviously having half time words and making changes, were soon back in the game when Mirallas (51) got one back and by the hour mark it was all-square when Naismith (59) heading home.

Then again, on the hour it wasn’t again as no sooner had the away fans’ celebrations ended was it three-two to Barnsley! Reds’ loanee from Arsenal Crowley (60) controlling a low half volley into the corner.

Extra time was forced, however Barnsley were still well in the game, when Lukaku (78) made it three-three with it the lurking Lukaku forcing Roberts (96) to prod the ball into his own net early in the extra time period to have the Premier League side ahead for the first time.

Barnsley had to go for it and a fine curling Hourihane effort looked destined for the top corner until this struck the angle of post and bar with Everton’s third round place, and a meeting with Reading, confirmed late on as the Toffees broke and Lukaku (115) made sure.
