Barnsley’s League 1 season continued with a win against Rochdale at Oakwell on Saturday with former Reds boss Keith Hill enduring an afternoon to forget on his return.

A second half Sam Winnall hat-trick came among five second half goals in a six-one win against Rochdale to see Barnsley continue the improvement of late.

Barnsley were ahead early on when Alfie Mawson headed in a cross from Adam Hammill inside the opening 10-minutes for the only goal of the first half with Winnall getting his first early in the second half again with Hammill the provider.

Rochdale, or so they thought, got back into the game midway through the second half when Nathaniel Mendez-Laing scored but Winnall added his second to restore the two-goal lead soon after when Man United loanee Ashley Fletcher set him up.

Three-goals in the final six-minutes, the fourth from Marley Watkins included Winnall’s hat-trick when he headed home in the last minute with Burnley loanee Kevin Long heading home the sixth to cap a fine afternoon for Barnsley.
