Barnsley’s League 1 season continued with, what’s basically becoming the norm now, another defeat at the Ricoh Arena against Coventry on Tuesday.

An early goal from Kent got Coventry ahead with Armstrong doubling this lead. Mawson gave Barnsley hope before Armstrong restored the two-goal cushion with Scowen again reducing the deficit.

However, the Sky Blues added a fourth through Cole with Scowen’s second, late on, a mere consolation in a four-three defeat.

With the pressure building on Johnson going into this game it couldn’t have been a worse possible start with Kent (3) scoring a solo opener for the hosts with only three-minutes on the clock with Newcastle loanee Armstrong (18), who is up for the Player of the Month again, finishing off a Phillips cross to make it two within 20-minutes.

Two-nil is how it stayed at half time.

If Barnsley were going to come back a reaction was needed quickly in the second half, which came with Mawson (48) scoring within minutes of the second half getting underway but just minutes later Armstrong (52) had that two-goal lead restored and it was back to square one for the Reds!

Scowen (54) fired in Barnsley’s second two-minutes later to again restore hope but former England international Cole (60) scored from a freekick on the hour to put Coventry four-two up.

An injury-time penalty from Scowen (90) was converted, with him completing a brace, but it wasn’t enough.

This seventh successive defeat saw Barnsley miss a chance, with this game in hand, to move out of the bottom four with 22nd, a very much unwanted position, ‘retained’ whereas Coventry also retain their place in 4th but only a point keeps them out of the top two and the automatic promotion places.
