Barnsley’s Capital One Cup run goes on after a dramatic penalty shootout win at Glanford Park against League 1 rivals Scunthorpe on Tuesday.

After a one-one draw with Scowen given Barnsley the lead only for Madden to draw the hosts level, following normal and extra time, a penalty shootout was required. The Reds held their nerve as Lee Johnson saw his side take up a place in the next round of the League Cup after a seven-six win.

These two side could do this again next month in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy too when they meet again!

Barnsley originally looked like they might ‘pay the penalty’ after a first half penalty miss from Watkins, he saw Scunthorpe ‘keeper Anyon keep out his effort from 12-yards in a goal less first half.

A second penalty award of the night, two-minutes into the second half, saw Scowen (47) step up this time and he made no mistake to give Barnsley the lead however this lasted only five-minutes before Scunthorpe’s lethal Madden (52) converted from the spot as well to draw the Iron level.

During the remainder of the 90-minutes, and then extra time, a winner couldn’t be found with both sides going close so it went to a penalty shootout….

Smith had the chance to win it but Scunthorpe ‘keeper Anyon again saved and the penalty drama went on! McAllister put his effort over the bar to leave Bree with another chance to win it for Barnsley and he made no mistake this time to send the Reds into round two.
