Barnsley’s League 1 season continued with another defeat at Roots Hall against Southend on Saturday.

A lead, given to Barnsley by a Scowen penalty, was lost with goals from Wordsworth and Prosser seeing Southend come from behind to win two-one and inflict another league defeat on the Reds.

Around the midway point of the first half Barnsley had the chance to take the lead when Southend ‘keeper Bentley fouled Watkins to give the Reds a penalty. Scowen (24) took responsibility and made no mistake.

This lead wasn’t maintained for very long though with the hosts soon level.

A little over 10-minutes later, and just under 10-minutes before half time too, Southend were level when Weston gave Wordsworth (36) the chance with the former Ipswich man taking this to make it one-all.

Southend still had time to get through to the break with a two-one lead when Prosser (43) was able to get in at the back post with the Shrimpers defender turning the game around just before the break.

There wasn’t to be a second half fightback by Barnsley with the defeat to Crewe a week ago, which was disappointing if not totally unexpected given this seasons form from the Reds, followed up by this defeat at Southend.

Usually Barnsley have beaten the ‘better sides’ but lost to the so-called ‘lesser’ ones.

That being said with the host in fine form heading into this game it wouldn’t, at least it shouldn’t have, come as too much of a surprise that they continued this with this win making it six wins from the last seven-matches played.
