We Get What We Deserve

The long haul of another Championship season is almost at an end, but Barnsley still remain uncertain about which league they will be playing their football in next season.

With just one game left, Simon Davey’s side need only a point to secure safety for another season in English football’s second tier. But Bryan Gunn’s Norwich City will be looking to make a miraculous escape on the final day of the season this Sunday.

The Canaries need nothing less than a victory at the Valley against already relegated Charlton Athletic, but will still join their opponents and Southampton in League 1 next season, should Plymouth fail to beat the Tykes.

Looking at Barnsley’s season from anything other than a Barnsley supporters point of view is a very difficult thing to do, but the facts are, if a side accumulates more points than any other team in their division, they are crowned champions, as Wolves were on Saturday. By the same token, if a side doesn’t collect more points than three other teams in their league, they are relegated – and without addressing the complications and injustices of F.A. sanctioned point deductions, who’s to argue with the facts?

So when 3pm comes on Sunday and the last relegation place in the Championship has been irreversably filled, Barnsley supporters, players and staff will know whether they do indeed deserve to stay in the division.
