Shirtliff was a local lad and played for Sheffield Wednesday for 7 years making over 200 appearances for the Owls. He subsequently moved to Charlton before returning to Hillsbrough in `89. An aging Shirtliff came to Oakwell in 1995 and used all his experience to help the tykes gain that automatic spot.
