Assistant head coach Tommy Wright and striker Sam Winnall have given their thoughts following the two nil victory over Gillingham yesterday.

Speaking to the Official Site taking over press conference duties from manager Lee Johnson for a change, Wright couldn’t have been more pleased with how we approached the game against the League One highflyers at Oakwell.

With goals coming from Ben Pearson and Sam Winnall, Wright was also honest enough to admit it was not our best performance on the day.

‘It wasn`t our best performance of the season. Our quality on the ball wasn`t great today but the important thing is knowing how to win ugly and we did that today. We weren`t playing well so when we stood up to their pressure in the second half it was pleasing. We knew they would get numbers into the box and we coped with it well.’

As for the two goals directly, Wright went on to say he wasn’t surprised with either of them as he’s seen both players put in that kind of quality often enough during training, so it was nice to see it come out on the pitch to give us all three points.

‘Ben Pearson technically strikes a great ball, so it was no surprise that it went in. The other goal was typical Marley Watkins. He`s strong, powerful and a great team player, so when he set up Sam Winnall he just does what he does best and put the ball in the net.’

Ending his brief interview, Wright went on to call for Barnsley to be far more consistent in the future as at the minute it is the one thing that’s costing us at points, but he was confident given the young nature of the side that it would come with more game time and experience for them as it’s always a learning curve.

‘We`ve got a very young team and with young players consistency is difficult to get because they are learning all the time. If you`re going to be successful you have to cope with playing Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday and deal with it. The lads are learning well.’

Moving on to Winnall, in his own interview he went on to say that his fourth goal of the season was for the fans and the backing they have given the squad so far in the new season.

‘It always helps when the fans are always behind you and I`m lucky. Ever since I`ve joined they`ve been nothing but great to me and I can`t say a bad word about any of them. They`ve supported me through the good times and the bad so I just encourage them to keep going and I`ll continue to put everything into the games and hopefully return the favour. A great relationship has blossomed since the day I joined so it`s been fantastic and long may it continue.’

With his own goal coming from sterling work by Marley Watkins, Winnall was quick to pass the credit on to his team mate.

‘Marley did fantastic and it`s another two assists for him and he`s been brilliant since he came in the summer. He`s going from strength to strength so full credit to him for assisting and I did the easy job of putting it in the back of the net. Those are the kind of chances that you dream of as a striker when it`s just coming back to you like that so you just have to hit the target low and hard and I did that. It was a game where we needed to grind out a win and we`ve done that today.’

With the performance capable of being better Winnall also added that overall it was a ‘pleasing day’ as we clicked up front and we kept the clean sheet and that would give confidence to everybody across the team.
