It might not have been glamorous, but Barnsley battled out what I thought was a tremendous point last night. I must admit that I think Blackpool are better than some of the teams I have seen in recent weeks, including the likes of QPR, Sheff Wed and Crystal Palace. Simon Grayson has got his men playing some great football with real determination showing throughout the side, and I felt Barnsley did well to come away from Bloomfield road with a point.
Although it might have seemed frustrating at times, Simon Davey appeared to go there with a game plan and it just about worked. You must feel a certain degree of sympathy for the reds gaffer having lost star-man Anderson De Silva through a horrible injury, but our squad should be more than capable of coping without him.
Backed by a few hundred Barnsley fans in that lonely open temporary stand at a very cold Bloomfield road on a wintry Tuesday night, that`s what football is all about: Being cold and miserable!
So its Chelsea next up for the Tykes; a sell-out home crowd; something that rarely happens at Oakwell. Where have all of these ‘fans` suddenly come from? Not denying the fact that it really is tremendous that the club have managed to sell all the tickets, giving the finances a huge boost and the town something to look forward to, but why don`t these people go to the games week in, week out, like the true supporters do?
Let`s face it, Barnsley aren`t a big club, and we can`t pull twenty plus thousand people through the turnstiles each week, but why show up and jump on the bandwagon, why not ‘support` the team by showing up every home game? Not turning up once every blue moon just to be able to go home and tell their friends they saw Frank Lampard or Didier Drogba. Out of the 23,000 that are going to be there on Saturday, taking into account 6,000 Chelsea supporters, just over a third of that remaining figure will be made up of season ticket holders.
I`ve said it before and I`ll say it again, as long as the glory ‘fans` don`t ask why Bruce Dyer isn`t playing or why Jovo Bosancic has been dropped, I won`t complain too much?honest.
