Bobby Hassell has been announced as the Barnsley Football Club player of the Year 2008/09.

Barnsley’s longest serving current player, who turns 29 in June, has clocked up 41 league and cup appearances for the Reds this season, impressing the supporters and staff alike, with his displays in midfield and defence.

The Oakwell stalwart was signed from Mansfield Town by Paul Hart in 2004 and has established himself as an indispensable utility player, making over 180 appearances all over the back line and midfield throughout his Barnsley career.

It wasn’t the best of starts to a season for Hassell though who found himself dropped after the first few games with the arrival of new boy Hugo Colace bumping him out of the side. But Hassell has dug deep and shown the true grit that Barnsley supporters admire, to come back and virtually pick himself for every game.

His display against Sheffield Wednesday this season was nothing short of heroic, when he helped the Reds pick up their first victory at Hillsborough since 1982.
