Davey frustrated with his strikers

Barnsley manager Simon Davey gave his thoughts following his side’s 1-0 defeat to Southampton at Oakwell this afternoon.

Simon told the post-match press conference:

“We had the possession and chances and could have won the game four times over but if you do not put them away then that is what can happen. Southampton had their chance and took it. We did not take one of the ten or fifteen opportunities we had.”

“It is frustrating and we had three strikers out there for most of the game who you would expect to put one away. We are very disappointed but we need to move on.”

“We created a lot of chances and were in control for eighty minutes.”

The Reds pressed and should have had a penalty in the 87th minute as Odejayi was wrestled to the ground in the Saints box:

“It was definitely a penalty at the end and there is not doubt about it but they did not see it.”

“I am not sure how we have lost it. We need to put those chances away and should have put one into the net. But that`s football, and it has a habit of kicking you in the teeth when you least expect it.”

Speaking on the growing list of injuries to key players, Simon said:

“Rob Kozluk has a chance for next week, Anderson has a chance but Hugo Colace, Diego Leon and Martine Devaney are all two or three weeks away.”

With the setback of not being able to sign Chesterfield`s Jamie Ward, Simon insists he and the Club are always hunting to better the squad:

“We are still looking at new players and have some irons in the fire. Hopefully things will move forward and we could have somebody in by the middle of next week. We need one or two strikers but with the way our midfield is at the moment we might even have to look there as well.”

“We will move on now and make sure we are firing on all cylinders at Norwich next Saturday.”
