Fate of the Tykes

Barnsley`s biggest game of the past decade arrives on Sunday. We all know why and we all know who we are playing, but many fans are torn in what they desire for Barnsley Football Club.

It is clear now that Barnsley are well and truly in a relegation dogfight and seeing as the squad wage bill has tripled since last season, relegation is definitely a ‘no go` for the chairman and board and more importantly the glory fans who are reluctant to leave the house on a fine wintry Tuesday evening (it`s difficult to understand normal human beings).

Although the club may have made a considerable amount of money from our fantastic cup run, attendances would surely drop should the club descend into League One. It would be fair to say that attendances aren`t good enough in this division, let alone thinking about what they would be like in the third tear of English football.

It`s also difficult to imagine what our recent flux of foreign players would think of playing against the likes of Northampton, Yeovil, Leyton Orient and possibly even Hereford and Peterborough – no disrespect intended.

Barnsley have come a long way in the last five years, and more particularly in the last twelve months, the club have invested in a number of quality players by splashing (in Barnsley`s case quite a bit of) cash about. Including the likes of Anderson de Silva and Jon Macken, few would have thought to see players of their respective calibre on display at the humble ground of Oakwell.

It would be an atrocity if the reds went down, as Barnsley had a tremendous start to the season and although Simon Davey brought in some more great players, injuries haven`t been too kind to the Welshman.

Lets say Barnsley stop up and get knocked out of the Cup on Sunday, in years to come people would look back and say “that`s the season Barnsley retained their championship status”. However if the tykes did go down but got hold of the F.A Cup, just imagine how long the townsfolk would be able to talk of the achievement, in a football world with billions of pounds, rich businessmen and hundreds of thousands earned every week, how a team from a small former mining town triumphed against all odds. That would be magical.

Either way, Barnsley`s cup run has been epic this season and in my eyes, along with many other true reds supporters, Barnsley are already Champions.
